![]() ![]() Although Venetian by birth, Christine expressed a fervent nationalism for France. ![]() She is saddened by this depiction of women and falls into a trance. The character of Lady Reason relays numerous rousing tales of significant, powerful female rulers with the intention of helping Christine build the City of Ladies, a sanctuary for women in a world bound by the laws of male dominance. In it, the narrator describes how she was sitting in her study reading The Lamentations of Matheolus, a 13th-century tirade against women and marriage. Christine De Pizan’s The City of Ladies is acknowledged as one of the earliest and most impactful feminist texts. Her involvement in the production of her books and her skillful use of patronage in turbulent political times has earned her the title of the first professional woman of letters in Europe. The Book of the City of Ladiesis framed as a ‘dream-vision’. By 1393, she was writing love ballads, which caught the attention of wealthy patrons within the court. ![]() "To support herself and her family, Christine became a court writer. The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright, but has one smallish semi-closed tear to the top front panel. The book and its contents are in clean, bright condition. And this evil statement was made during a time when the bubonic plague was decimating Europe. B&W Illustrations This book is in Near Fine condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. When Christine de Pizan penned The Book of The City of Ladies, she was doing so in part because a dirtbag philosopher said that women were among the worst things that God had ever created. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book would get a solid 4.5 from me in the overall category if half stars were an option. Same story, different characters, new ending Then if you fall in love with Robin's work, branch out into her other books, including this one. My advice if you have never read any of Robin's books: Start with "Beauty" or "The Blue Sword" or "The Hero and the Crown". I think "Beauty" was the romantic ideal of an unmarried woman in her 20s, and "Rose Daughter" is the romantic ideal of a married woman in her 40s. I can see now that "Rose Daughter" has much to offer. I did not reread "Rose Daughter" again until this audio version came out. When this book first came out on paper, I got it immediately, but I was Very fond of "Beauty" and I think I was jealous on its behalf. But this story is fairly different in many ways. They are both telling the same fairy tale, after all. Oddly, many years and books after "Beauty" Robin chose to tell the story of Beauty and the Beast again. ![]() ![]() ![]() Her first book is entitled, "Beauty" and is the story of Beauty and the Beast. Robin McKinley is one of my favorite authors in the whole world. ![]() ![]() They desire to burn and negate, ostensibly on the theory that universal destruction will clear the ground for a better future-but clearly, in the case of the frightening sociopath Pyotr Stepanovich above all, their nihilism is undertaken for its sake and its own pleasure, as an end in itself, since they are a lost generation with literally nothing to live for. But the novel instead emphasizes the emptiness of its radical conspirators. ![]() Dostoevsky does send up the intellectual left in terms that remain amusingly relevant, from its notorious circular-firing-squad social dynamics to the feckless radical chic of social elites. ![]() While this story of nihilist-socialist radicals run amok in provincial Russia is touted as Dostoevsky’s political novel, his pamphlet novel, there’s surprisingly little substantial ideological discussion or debate. ![]() ![]() Martino seems to have had exclusive access to this material, but he does not tell us where the rest of it is, which is a pity because Bioy is a considerable writer in his own right, even if many critics still see him first and foremost as Borges’s friend, and collaborator in numerous stories and satires which they jointly wrote under the pseudonyms of H. ![]() Martino says that “Bioy’s diaries open up a vast universe where his notes on his conversations with Borges coexist with his writings on everyday life and his frequent examinations of matters of conduct”. The diary clearly covered many other topics, and they are tantalizingly referred to by Daniel Martino, the editor of Borges, in a short, unilluminating preface. In 1947 Bioy started to write a diary, in which he recorded the often daily conversations that make up this gargantuan book. From then on they enjoyed an extraordinarily intense literary friendship which lasted until Borges’s death in 1986. ![]() TLS, nº 5439, 27 junio de 2007 (la edición en papel está fechada el 29):Īdolfo Bioy Casares had his first conversation with Jorge Luis Borges in 1931 or 1932, when Bioy was about eighteen and Borges was thirty-two. When their lives intersect at a house party, Lord Julian hatches a plan to benefit them both. Meanwhile, Lord Julian Belfry, the second son of a marquess, has scandalized society as an actor and owner of a theater-the kind of establishment where men take their mistresses, but not their wives. However, due to her father's large debts, her only suitor is the persistent and odious owner of her father's favorite gambling house. Lady Emily Turner has been a debutante for six seasons now and should have long settled into a suitable marriage.
